![]() There’s an abstract, poetic quality to Greyhound it’s less about rah-rah heroics than it is about the secret burden of heroism-because with wartime heroism, there’s always a price to pay. ![]() A war adventure set on the bleak, pearl-gray seas of the Atlantic, it’s tense and quietly thrilling, though it’s brushed with somber elegance, too. Don’t know what a Fletcher-class destroyer is? Don’t worry- Greyhound, out now on Apple TV+, is perfectly enjoyable even if you don’t catch every nuance of the lingo. But don’t let that stop you from seeing Greyhound, starring-and written by- Tom Hanks, as a World War II naval officer who’s just been given command of his first Fletcher-class destroyer. Greyhound is set to make it to theaters later this year on June 12.War movies nearly always automatically get filed under “Stuff Your Dad Likes,” whether your own personal dad has any feelings about them or not. With war movies finding that kind of success, Hanks throwing himself into the mix should be box office catnip for dads who want to go to the movies this summer. After Dunkirk’s immense box office success in 2017, there was last year’s Midway, a fine-enough movie that almost no one under the age of 50 saw, but still managed to make almost $60 million at the domestic box office. Speaking of Dunkirk, Greyhound seems to be the latest in a string of movies about naval operations in the second World War. It’s also worth noting that this is Hanks’ first return to World War II since 1998’s Saving Private Ryan - unless you count his narration in the mini-series The Pacific, which we do not. The last time was 2011’s Larry Crowne, a misbegotten romcom which Hanks also directed, but it looks like he’s giving himself a little bit more to do here. This isn’t the first time Hanks has written a movie he’s starred in, but it’s been a while. ![]() From there, all naval-hell breaks loose, waves crash into boats, torpedoes are fired, and Tom Hanks makes that worried-but-brave face that he’s so good at. While the boat is on patrol, it’s ambushed by a pack of Nazi U-boats. destroyer in the early days of World War II. ![]() Greyhound - which is, like all great dad-movies, inspired by a actual events - follows captain Ernest Krause, played by Tom Hanks, on his first day in command of a U.S. In other words, it might be the most dadcore movie ever made. The trailer for Tom Hanks’ latest movie is here, and it looks like what you get if you mixed Captain Phillips with Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk. ![]()
